I used to think that happiness finds you, happens to you. And then, I found that it’s the other way around.

If you, like me, think that happiness should find you, let me introduce the concept of Glimmer and how this can help you increase your happiness every day.

What is a glimmer?

As part of my development process, I am going through a trauma-informed program called The Healing Hub. And one of the things that have helped me the most is the concept of a Glimmer.

First, don’t you just love that word? Deb Dana coined it, a licensed clinical social worker specializing in complex trauma. It refers to small moments when we feel safe or calm.

A glimmer is not meant to be a huge thing. It’s not an expensive vacation or an out-of-this-world event. A glimmer is loving that first sip of coffee in the morning. The look of a loved one. A plant that you take care of. Hugging your pet.

Why should glimmers matter to you?

Glimmers are vital for our health. They help you regulate yourself when you are stressed out or having a hard time. There’s a lot more to it but think about them as little sparks that will make your nervous system release happy hormones inside you. And we all want our happy hormones, right?

Here’s the trick: you must plan for your glimmers.

How to use glimmers every day?

Actively look for them during the day.

Make a list of glimmers and use them whenever you need to. If you just had a stressful call, maybe blast your favorite song afterward. Or hug your pet. Or take a walk and feel the sun on your skin. Your glimmers will help you bring yourself to a good place. And you will be reshaping your nervous system to land on and stay in a calmer place instead of getting stuck with triggering feelings.
